Three months after lifting the T20 World Cup, India’s T20 setup looks completely different. A new captain has been named, a World Cup-winning skipper has been dropped, and a 15-year-old is on the verge of breaking one of cricket’s most iconic records.

Shreyas Iyer: The Captain India Was Waiting For

For close to two and a half years, Shreyas Iyer played no T20 International cricket for India. His last appearance in the format came in December 2023, and in the time since, the Mumbai batter had to watch the squad from the outside — not because he was short of ability, but because India’s middle order simply had no room. Suryakumar Yadav and Tilak Varma had locked down the spots, and Iyer had to be patient.

That patience has now been rewarded in the biggest possible way. The Board of Control for Cricket in India (BCCI) has officially appointed Iyer as India’s new T20I captain, a role that comes with the responsibility of shaping this team’s future all the way to the 2028 Los Angeles Olympics and the T20 World Cup in Australia and New Zealand that same year.

The logic behind the appointment is straightforward once you look at Iyer’s record as a leader. In the IPL, he has become one of the most decorated captains in the competition’s history — the only man to have guided three different franchises to the IPL final. He took Delhi Capitals to their maiden final in 2020, led Kolkata Knight Riders to their third title in 2024, and brought Punjab Kings to a runners-up finish in 2025. His IPL batting record during this period has been equally commanding.

Chief selector Ajit Agarkar explained the decision plainly: Iyer was “a standout candidate.” The selectors looked at his leadership credentials, his batting form, and the road ahead, and concluded that he was the right man to carry this team into its next chapter.

What About Suryakumar Yadav?

The harder story to tell is Suryakumar’s. Just three months ago, he was celebrating with the T20 World Cup trophy as India’s captain — the architect of an extraordinary back-to-back World Cup triumph. And now, at 35, he has not just lost the captaincy; he has been dropped from the squad entirely.

The numbers make the selectors’ reasoning clear. At the home T20 World Cup, Suryakumar scored 242 runs in nine innings at a strike rate of 136 — respectable by most standards, but well below the explosive, gravity-defying batting that made him the world’s number one T20 batter. In IPL 2026 with Mumbai Indians, the dip continued: only 270 runs in 13 innings at an average of 20 and a strike rate of 147.

For a batter whose identity is built around striking at 180 or above, these are grounded numbers at an age when the selectors are clearly looking beyond the next series. Indian cricket has shown a willingness to make these hard calls before — Rohit Sharma was replaced as ODI captain in similar circumstances last year, even after leading India to the Champions Trophy title. The trend is consistent: results matter, but so does form and the future.

Vaibhav Sooryavanshi: 15 Years Old and Already Making History

If the captaincy story was the headline, the Vaibhav Sooryavanshi selection was the moment that stopped everyone in their tracks. The 15-year-old Rajasthan Royals opener — born in March 2011, still a schoolboy by age — has been named in India’s senior T20 squad for the tours of Ireland and England, as well as the Asian Games 2026 in Japan.

His selection is entirely merit-based, and the IPL 2026 numbers are extraordinary. Playing as an opener for Rajasthan Royals, Sooryavanshi finished as the Orange Cap winner — the tournament’s top run-scorer — with 776 runs in 16 innings at a strike rate of 237.30. Along the way he smashed 72 sixes, shattering Chris Gayle’s long-standing IPL record of 59 sixes in a single season. He became the first player in IPL history to win both the Most Valuable Player and Best Emerging Player awards in the same season.

The record at stake is one of Indian cricket’s most sacred. Sachin Tendulkar holds the mark as India’s youngest senior men’s debutant — he was 16 years and 205 days old when he played against Pakistan in a Test match in 1989. Sooryavanshi is currently 15 years and 71 days. If he gets a game in Belfast against Ireland on June 26 or 28, or during the five-match England T20 series from July 1 to 11, he will rewrite that 36-year-old piece of history.
